Why Every Project Has a Theme Song
At Anna’s request, I’m putting a bit of context around “the music thing” we’re doing at ImmyBot this year. Since it was my idea, I suppose I should tell the story.
TL/DR. In 2026, every project and initiative the ImmyBot krewe takes on is tied to a song selected by the team and/or team lead.
… Yes, really. We are building our ImmyBot Jamz 2026 Playlist.
Where the idea started
This idea actually spun off from a little group project James Abercrombie asked some of us to do a few years ago. He wanted a playlist about each of our lives that explained who we are and how we got there. There were no restrictions except each person’s playlist couldn’t be more than 10 to 15 songs. Then we all listened to them together and shared why each song made the list. It was simple, fun, and a surprisingly meaningful way to get to know others in the channel. To say I absolutely loved it is an understatement.
Sitting around a table at IT Nation Connect sharing our playlists and telling our stories created a feeling I wish everyone could experience… A feeling of connection, creativity, and deeper understanding of the people around me.
Turning goals into something memorable
Fast forward to this year… We finalized our four overarching company goals for the year; I went back to our notion board and started dumping them in. But it felt boring and it didn’t feel very “us”. We’ve never been a company that does things the same way as everyone else. While yes, the work needs to get done and matters, why can’t it be a bit fun?
I started tying each overarching company goal to a song just to bring myself a little joy while doing the monotonous work… And then I did that for the community team goals. Before I knew it, I had created a Spotify playlist to accompany where we’re headed in 2026. I probably spent entirely too much time deciding on the songs, but that was part of the fun.
The idea is for each team to pick songs that match the energy, the intention, and/or the people behind the work.
And, y’all… It’s been super fun! As Anna said, “Getting to name a project after The Killers is iconic”.
What started as a small creative exercise quickly spread. The team picked it up and ran with it. Now, every project across the organization gets a song, and along with that song we’re able to relate the purpose of each project.
We’re building a full playlist that will be available to partners, non-partners, and anyone who wants to follow along. It’s influencing our marketing and our branding (I think y’all are going to like what we’re doing!), and it’s changing how we talk about what we’re building this year. It’s brought a bit of fun into the normal everyday work.
… Because in 2026, the ImmyBot team is finding our groove.
Why fun & engagement matters (especially for a remote team)
One of the best parts of this idea is how many people it involves. It literally involves everyone on our team! You working at ImmyBot? Guess what! You get to pick a song (if you want to, no pressure) that goes with your project or goal. Everyone gets to participate in shaping the vibe of what we’re building.
For a fully remote team, the vibe and culture matter.
When people don’t see each other every day, maintaining a sense of shared culture and energy takes an immense (see what I did there 😉) amount of effort. This gives us a way to stay connected beyond tasks and deadlines to creativity and personality. It gives us another way to understand each other and enjoy the work we’re doing.
… Plus, it’s pretty cool saying “Excuse me, how does this play into the “Don’t Stop Me Now” project?”
And now we’re here..
My goal with this is super simple, I hope this brings joy and fun to our team and the extended ImmyBot community. Maybe it will make what we’re working on more engaging to follow and be part of… Who knows?! Maybe it encourages others to remember our work can be meaningful while also still being super fun.
